Box Content Survey Results. 10/11/2020

Thank you for taking the time to tell us what you want.

I learned a lot by the results of the survey.  I’m going to break down the results into two emails.  This one will detail the box content specifically and next weeks email will cover answers to the last question about what we can do to improve.

One thing I want to stress is that is focused on Florida first.  It may seem silly to say this, but apparently some people don’t realize that we can’t provide Florida items when there is no harvesting going on here.  Over the last few weeks, we’ve been able to find a few items, but now, with the fall harvesting season coming on, more and more of the contents will again be from Florida.  🙂

So what vegetables do you like?
 1 Broccoli
2Green beans
19Spaghetti Squash
20Brussel Sprouts
5Round tomatoes
21Red leaf lettuce
6Sweet potatoes
23Pickle size cucumbers
9Romaine lettuce
26Iceberg lettuce
29Pablano peppers
14Roma tomatoes
15Green peppers’
31Cubanelle peppers
16Yellow Squash
32Long hot peppers

What do you think?  I like it.  In another week or so I’ll be updating the boxes to the “veg only”, “fruit only”, and “mixed box”.  The mixed box will pretty much stay in the top 10 or 15 items of each category, and the “fruit only” and “veg only” box will still randomly walk up and down the list.

Next up is the fruit.
24Star Fruit

The next question was:
“On occasion, would it be OK with you to include items that are not harvesting in the U.S. Items such as bananas, or avocados?”
 Yes82.10% No

This is a huge majority that is ok with out of the country items, however items from other countries will still remain a small part of what we provide.  But I am glad that it will occasionally be okay, because sometimes there are incredibly good items that are just not available in the U.S.  I’ll try to remember to do a content and sourcing video each Monday morning.  Many people commented on last weeks video and how much they liked it.  We’ll continue it.

The last question we’ll cover today is:

If you haven’t ordered lately, why not?  My comments are in bold.

1.  Other. Please tell us why in the answer on the next question.
29.00%       All these various answers will be categorized and commented on in the email next week.

2.  I forget to order.
24.60%       That’s why we created a new website with recurring orders.  Sign up for it.  You can set up weekly, bi-weekly or monthly pickups and/or donations.  If you have a hard time, call us at 727-469-3448.  In the future, if you need to pause it or cancel it, and you can’t seem to do it on the website, you can just call us.‬  It’s easy.

3.  I get items I don’t like.
20.10%       Thanks to the survey results above, we are going to do our best to included the most wanted items in the mixed box.  That should help you if you are getting unwanted items.  If you want items from all over the list, order the “fruit only” and/or “veg only” boxes.

4.  I used to pickup at one of your closed locations, and now the pickup locations are too far away.
11.20%       I’m sorry we had to close those locations.  We had to close because each day we were open it was a 16 hour day for me.  Not only did I not have time for myself, but I didn’t have time to do things the business needed.  I have a solution that is being implemented this week.  I’ve been working on it now for 2 months.  Hopefully it will go great.  We look forward to reopening Tarpon soon, and other locations as well.

5.  I can’t make your pickup times.
7.70%       If this helps you, in the next couple weeks, we are going to change our pickup window to 6:30 instead of 6.  I don’t want to go till 7 because with winter coming on, it will start getting dark at 6pm.  I’m sorry if that still doesn’t help you.  Perhaps you could team up with a friend or neighbor to get yours when they get theirs?  Lots of people do that.  Some people when they pickup are getting boxes for 3 or 4 families.

6.  The quality or freshness of the items in the box is not good.
4.10%       We constantly work to make sure all items are good.  What are we doing to improve?  Since we portion the boxes on site during the pickup time, we sometimes have to hurry.  From now on, we’re going to be more focused on inspecting each item as we bag it.  Sometimes during one pickup we are providing almost 2000 of an item.  As you can imagine, when we give out 2000 tomatoes during a pickup, some that are not good slip through.  We’ll work harder to minimize that.

The box is too expensive. I get fruit and vegetables cheaper somewhere else.
3.30%       Our goal is to provide families that need help, and your family, with locally harvested items at a price that covers the cost of doing it.  We encourage your participation by putting as much in the bags as we can.  That’s fair to you, but even more importantly to me, it’s fair to the food bank, and the families that depend on them.

Thank you again for participating and responding to the survey.  This email has been a bit long winded, but I feel openness and communicating back and forth between us creates a sense of partnership and comradery.  That’s the way I feel.  We’re in this together to make things better for all of us.
