Strawberries have been around for centuries and were first mentioned in ancient Roman literature for their medicinal properties. Ancient Romans used the berries to treat everything from depression to fever and sore throats.

Wild strawberries were cultivated during the 16th and 17th centuries. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the first documented garden strawberry plant was grown in France.

In Florida, there are over 11,000 acres growing strawberries and in Plant City the largest Strawberry Celebration in the world takes place every year. Thousands of people flock to Plant City every year to take place in the revelry. Concerts, carnivals, and of course tons and tons of Strawberry dishes are had.

Who knew?!

Strawberries aren’t really berries at all! Strawberries are not considered to be an actual berry because the seeds grow on the outside of the fruit. In fact, strawberries are the only fruit that have their seeds on the outside of their skin.

These sweet smelling little princesses are actually considered part of the rose family and their unmissable fragrance is evident from plant to plate.

Perennial plants grow back every year, and strawberries are part of this crop type.

Good Eats!

Eating eight strawberries a day has been shown to lower blood pressure and to improve memory and heart health. Not only that, eating strawberries on a regular basis may lower the risk of some cancers and help reduce obesity. This serving size actually provides more vitamin C than one orange.

A dash of balsamic vinegar, lemon juice or orange juice will bring out the flavor of strawberries. YUM!

Never rinse or cut strawberries until you are ready to eat them – it speeds up their spoiling.

American’s, on average, eat about 3.4 lbs of strawberries every year.

Wow, who knew it was considered part of the rose family, that small servings had more vitamin C than oranges and it really isn’t a berry at all?!
